We understand that having a child leave for college is enough of a challenge, now they tell you they want to join a Fraternity. Unless you were yourself a member of the Greek community this decision may leave you with more questions than answers. This page is written to help you with some of those thoughts.

First let's cover some of the benefits of fraternity life:

1. UC Berkeley has over 23,000 undergrads. One of the best ways to thrive in this sometimes overwhelming community is to make Cal smaller. This means finding groups and activities which can provide a grounding. Creating a smaller community out of a larger one provides support while reducing the stress of Cal's large campus.

2. Fraternities can provide some of the best leadership opportunities on the Cal campus. The fraternity operates though the leadership of elected officers, from facility management to President, there are many roles which can give your son a level of leadership exposure rarely seen on a college campus. These experiences are highly respected by potential employers following graduation.

3. As anyone who has been a member of a fraternity will tell you, the friends they met there they keep for life. College is primarily about learning, yet that can be difficult without the support of quality friends. A fraternity can provide that.
